The Museum of Extinct Species
Location:
Ouseburn Valley, Newcastle, England
Project Title:
Architectural design: Project 3 - Extinction
Time of Study:
2nd year - 2nd semester - Stage 5
Project Brief:
The project looks to elevate your understanding of the challenges posed by the Climate Crisis and the inherent impact this has on the natural world as we understand it. In participating in this project, you will further develop your evolving architectural position in relation to people, place, and program, while reconciling the tensions created by the competing demands these contexts present.
Building Summary:
My concept is a public experience to be situated in the lower Ouseburn Valley, with the intention of raising public interest in and awareness of past mass extinction and using that story to bring it back to present endangerment of species, thus of the ecological effects of the historical, current, and future climate crises. It aims to educate via an inter-active and immersive Journey, with the aim of catalysing collective action.
The multiple floors, accessible to all users represent the unique biomes of the species exhibited. These are designed to immerse the user into the worlds of species that no longer walk this earth.
Designed to create a journey through time, the museum focuses on the senses and emotions of users. It aims to create a user experience of losing and gaining hope throughout the journey, promoting an emotional response in the user with the intent of leaving a powerful message and inspiring change in attitudes and habits to reduce further extinction.
